Tom’s Restaurant in Brooklyn.

A few days ago, I wrote that my favorite New York restaurant to take visiting out-of-towners to is Curly’s Lunch on East 14th. I like it because there are a million delicious vegan/vegetarian options on the menu, which eases the stress/guesswork on me if my guest happens to eat like that. It’s just damn good vegetarian food, which I’m not always crazy about. Especially if it’s fake meat. Curly’s does a good job in the fake meat department, though. It’s also a short walk from Union Square, which makes it easy for almost everybody to get to. It’s a great place. Try the pizza fries. Pizza Fries.

But it’s not my true favorite place to take people. My favorite place to take people, and my favorite place to eat in general, is Tom’s. With all my heart, I love Tom’s Restaurant on Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Wanna go? Let’s go sometime. I live close by. We’ll have a nice breakfast.

I love every inch of every wall covered in newspaper reviews, tacky decorative plates, and Christmas lights. The friendly service, the old-timey piano music, the framed and autographed 8x10 of an astronaut, the orange slices and cinnamon sugar toast they put on your table with your menus, I could go on for hours.

They do amazing breakfasts. My usual is the huevos rancheros. Their pancake game is out of control. Mango walnut pancakes, lemon ricotta pancakes. I love the cranberry Belgian waffles. I have yet to try the pumpkin waffle they do, but it’s on my radar. For lunch, I’ve had awesome meatball parms, awesome chicken parms. I had the fried chicken special the last time I went, it was awesome.

Cool as hell 1930’s drinks? YES! Egg Cream! Cherry-Lime Ricky! This place is the spot.

Someday we’re going to go to Tom’s together and you’ll love it too.
